The honest state

One route, one purpose, one operator.

The most solid German case today is medical. Zollernalb Klinikum flies with DiAvEn between Albstadt and Balingen, roughly twenty kilometres, authorised by the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt since August 2024, at SAIL III, carrying UN 3373 dangerous goods, in scheduled operation since early 2025 at around seven flights a day, seven days a week. That is not a small thing, quite the opposite: it is the proof that it works. But it is also the real order of magnitude.

The reason for that order of magnitude sits in the regulation, not in the technology. Since 29 September 2025, SORA 2.5 has been the binding means of compliance to Regulation (EU) 2019/947. For beyond-visual-line-of-sight flights over populated areas there is no simplified predefined scenario to rely on. Every such route needs the full individual assessment. Once you know that effort, you plan differently: start with the routes where the benefit is large and the ground risk is small.

Route before aircraft

Route first, aircraft second. Origin, destination, payload, time window and what lies underneath decide whether it can be approved. The aircraft is the last choice, not the first.

SORA as a work package

SORA 2.5 has been the binding means of compliance to Regulation (EU) 2019/947 since 29 September 2025 (EASA ED Decision 2025/018/R). For BVLOS over populated areas there is no simplified predefined scenario, which means a full individual assessment, typically SAIL III to IV.

Operations with certified partners

wedrone does not fly and holds no operational authorisation. We structure the route, the compliance path and the pad, and bring in the operator who carries the authorisation. Apian runs the same model in UK healthcare: routine operation, without Apian flying itself.

Note: wedrone is a systems integrator, not an aviation operator. wedrone holds no operational authorisations of its own and does not fly itself. Whether a route can be approved depends on the specific case. On manufacturer claims: Wingcopter is not EASA type-certified, the FAA issued only Special Class Airworthiness Criteria in 2022, which is not a type certificate; Matternet M2 remains the only FAA type-certificated delivery platform.

The flight ends at the pad. The delivery does not.

A parcel on the roof has not reached the recipient. The route from the kerb or the pad to the door is its own problem, with its own regulation and its own failure modes, and the state of it is soberer than the videos suggest. We have collected it on its own page, with sources.

FAQ

Will my parcel arrive by drone soon?
Not as the normal case, and not first. The reason is not the technology but the ground risk: for beyond-visual-line-of-sight flights over populated areas there is no simplified predefined scenario, only the full SORA assessment, since 29 September 2025 under SORA 2.5 (EASA ED Decision 2025/018/R). What works today is fixed routes between fixed points. Doorstep delivery is a separate question on the ground, and the picture there is similarly sober, see our last-mile page.

Which drone do you recommend?
Route first, aircraft second, and we are careful with certification claims. Wingcopter is not EASA type-certified; in 2022 the FAA issued only Special Class Airworthiness Criteria, which is not a type certificate. Matternet M2 remains the only FAA type-certificated delivery platform. The market routinely flattens these distinctions, and they decide how heavy your compliance path becomes.
What does a drone delivery cost?
It depends on the route, not the drone, and we do not put a price per delivery on a website. It can only be modelled once origin, destination, payload, frequency and time window are fixed, because the approval effort is a real cost block and rises with the SAIL. What we can tell you beforehand is whether your route is a drone case at all.
Do we need a landing pad?
As a rule yes, and at both ends. A flight ends on a surface, not with a person. We plan the pad with you, from the surface itself through securing and power to the handover, and connect it to the route inside the building. The wedrone Pads cover private and business sites.
Where does the drone stop and the ground begin?
At the landing surface. Everything after it, meaning the route into the building, the floor, the handover and the proof, is ground robotics and runs through werob. Air and ground only make a chain together, and in almost every real project the ground share is the larger one.
